Shelby Self, 11, of Jackson County, uses clippers Saturday to cut off milkweed pods at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. Self and her grandparents, Jacob and Rose Armand of Seymour, picked milkweed pods as part of National Public Lands Day. By harvesting milkweed seeds from the pods and planting them in different places at the refuge, staff hope to increase the population of monarch butterflies.
